Balkand Mangalacharan Shloka - 3

Bal-kand : Mangalacharan Shloka 3
Shri-Ramcharitmanas and secret imports : Balkand, Mangalacharan Shlok - 3
॥श्री:॥
॥ सीताराम ॥

vandē bōdhamayaṃ nityaṃ guruṃ śaṃkararūpiṇam‌।
yamāśritō hi vakrō'pi candraḥ sarvatra vandyatē॥3॥
॥ śrīrāmacaritamānasa bālakāṇḍa maṃgalācaraṇa ślōka 3॥

भावार्थ:-ज्ञानमय, नित्य, शंकर रूपी गुरु की मैं वन्दना करता हूँ, जिनके आश्रित होने से ही टेढ़ा चन्द्रमा भी सर्वत्र वन्दित होता है॥3॥

Purport: I make obeisance to the eternal preceptor (Guru) in the form of Lord Shankara, who is all wisdom, and resting on whose brow the crescent moon, though crooked in shape, is universally adored.॥3॥

― बोधमयं नित्यं गुरुं (bōdhamayaṃ nityaṃ guruṃ) - गुरु वह है जो मोहजनित अंधकार को मिटा कर परमात्म-तत्त्व (श्री राम) का बोध करा देवे |

Guru is the one alike Lord Shiva (शंकररूपिणम्‌) who removes the ignorance (Avidya) and gives the proper knowledge of the absolute, the supreme essence (Shri Ram).

So here it is the Vandana of Guru-Maharaj in form of Lord Shankar.

― In previous Mangalacharan Shloka, Goswami Ji invoked and reverenced Bhagavati Parvati and Bhagavan Shiva , where Bhagavati Parvati Ji represents an embodiment of Shraddha (respect, reverence and devotion on the instructions received from Guru) and Lord Shiva represents Vishwas (unshakable faith on the Ishta-Deva Shri Ram). However in this verse, Goswami Ji reverenced Lord Shiva as His Guru.

Why Goswami Ji reverenced eternal Guru in form of Shiva?

- Because, Lord Shiva is the first preceptor of Shri Ramcharitmanas and He imparted this ravishing tale of Shri Ramcharitmanas to his consort UmA (Parvati) and Kak-Bhusundi Ji.
- Everywhere in Shri Ramcharitmanas, Bhagavan Shankar Ji is regarded as Guru or sometimes He regarded Parvati-Shiva as his parents. Guru and Guru-Mata are also treated as parents in Sanatan-Vedic Dharma.
- Lord Shiva is the one who is the greatest devotee of Lord Ram , knows the true Vaishnav-Dharma, and hence always preaches about Lord Ram.

― In each of the previous two shlokas, two deities are invoked like in first Sararswati and Ganesha and in second Bhavani (Paravti) and Lord Shiva, but in this Shloka only one personality is reverenced. It is because Guru is the one who has very special and unique status, He is equal to Param-Brahman or alike to Ishta-Deva. As like Ishta-Deva, Guru is also Advitiya (second to none).

Our Upanishad says:

यस्य देवे परा भक्तिर्यथा देवे तथा गुरौ |
तस्यैते कथिता ह्यर्थाः प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः || (Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.27)

As like the supreme devotion (Para-Bhakti) in Ishta-Deva (Shri Ram), one should have same and equal devotion in Guru-Maharaj, only then after the real imports of Vedic-scriptures are revealed automatically in hearts of those great souls .

― वक्रोऽपि चन्द्रः सर्वत्र वन्द्यते (vakrō'pi candraḥ sarvatra vandyatē) Lord Shiva doesn't keep full moon but crescent moon, only because crescent moon is alike to Ra-kara (र-कार) of Ram Naam. Such is the supreme faith of lord Shiva towards Ram Naam. And that crescent moon became worthy of reverence after lord Shiva adorned it on his head assuming it the name of Ram. Ra-Kara is the crescent shaped and Ma-Kara is the pleasantness and peacefulness present in moon.
